Fertilisation in plants

07 May

When pollen grains are transferred from anther onto the stigma, they germinate in the sugary solution and produce a pollen tube which penetrates the style into the ovary to get to the ovules.

when the pollen tube reaches the ovule, the tip of the pollen tube will break and male gamete is released into the ovule which contain the female gamete. Fertilisation will occur in the ovule when one of the male gametes fuses with the female gamete (ovum). This form a zygote which will eventually form the the embryo.

After fertilisation, the ovary will develop into a fruit, the ovule develop into a seed. The sepals, petals, stamen and stigma will wither and fall off.
